Giblet

Katie has taken to planning meals and then helping me make them (baked chicken tonight) and this was our conversation...
Katie-Mom, the chicken's name was Gilbert
Me-Katie, the chicken's don't come with names, we don't name our food.
Katie-Yes, it does...its name is Gilbert.
Me-Katie, we don't name our food, ok?!
Katie-Look right here, mom, it says on the package, Gilbert, and he is missing some of his parts.
:D. Oh, Katie, its giblet! and even though I'm laughing on the insides, I'm smiling and saying on the outside...oh I understand now, I see what you mean..  :D
I love this story sweet girl...I will forever remember it, love your help in the kitchen (most days :) as you fly around from spot to spot, trying to do it all. You are really growing up!!

in baseball

While watching baseball bloopers and home plate collisions...we heard this said with attitude by you, our eight year old, Katie..."I'd tell that dude, that it's down right mean. I know you want to win the game, but it's more important to love them then hurt them!"  :D

While Watching the Superbowl...

Katie says, "If God wants the Seahawks to win, they will.  If God wants the Patriots to win, they will.  But by the looks of things God hasn't decided yet."  -The score is tied 0-0 right now.  :D

Katie Talk...

Justin was helping Katie with her room, well, more specifically her baby doll room.  Kit's room is located in a cleaned out space in her closet.  She has decorated, organized and thought through anything and everything that needs to be in this room.  She has asked for new things for Christmas because she has scoured the American Girl Doll Magazine that faithfully comes to our mailbox each month. If you ask her about Kit, Magnolia, Lily, Hope, Gerrie, Belle...she can and will talk your ear off.  Try it. :)

I asked my mom if I was this interested in dolls at Katie's age, she said I loved the ones I had, but my sister, Jessa, was the one always surrounded and living life with her dolls.  Aunt Pie, I'm sure you are wanting to play dolls with Katie right now, right?

This stage is fun and shows what she is mimicking from our lives.  We can also say with huge hearts-she's a maniac.  :D

Below is a snippet of a conversation around our home between Daddy and Katie...
----------
Katie-"I am having all these problems with Kit's room. I have all different colors everywhere and non of them match.  I don't have a theme for my room. I need to cut out the different things I have and lay them out to see where each one needs to go, like a room layout,"

Daddy- "I don't think these are really problems."

Katie- "You are right, Daddy, these are not problems they are opportunities."

Learning Football

Last Saturday we turned on the Alabama vs Ole Miss football game and if we could have recorded the last 7 minutes we would have in a heart beat.  A few quotes from the last few minutes...

Owen-
Owen yelling back to Katie, giving her updates about the football game. "KATIE, they just got a home run!"

Seriously talking to Justin, "Daddy, don't you think that is really nice for that guy to hold the ball (for the extra kick :) while the other man kicks?

Owen looking afraid and amazed, "Daddy, if we were on the first row could we jump the fence and run onto the field???"

Katie-
Laughing hysterically as people rush the field after Ole Miss won, "Daddy, what are they doing? They are trying to jump and push down the poles!"

Tee ball back seat conversations

I want to play tee ball for my next sport with my birthday money because I am a strong hitter and maybe hit it over the fence. I'm fast at running and I'm sneaky. When I'm on base, I can sneak between bases if I get stuck on a base. I want to sneak away from the base if they have that rule. I would also like the pitching position.  It would be a little hard to do a fast ball. I am going to have so much goodness. -says katie
And I can throw a fast ball. I just turn my head and turn my back and step and throw fast.  I want to grow up and do baseball and not softball. Do know what position I want to be in? I want to be a pitcher. -commented Owen

Kid quotes from the back seat

Katie-
Owen I just want to give you a little advice.  Don't watch, "How to Train a Dragon", because its a little too scary.  Its not too scary, but you shouldn't watch it because it is a little bit to much with the fire dragon. But the fire dragon doesn't last long though.

I don't want to not watch Jesus music, but I wouldn't mind watching something else too. -this is after they listened to the music DVD, over and over for 1.5 hours.  :) And Owen and she said repeatedly they love singing and reading the words as they belt out these tunes in the back seat.
Super cute quotes from the back seat

Bread and A Bowl

Though to you this photo might seem  unworthy of a post...but to me this mean katie is listening, watching and growing up. She is thinking of loving people with simple beautiful things.  You see her friend, Daisy, came over to play on Friday.  (It's a huge treat to pick up a friend from the classroom and bring her home to play, I mean huge treat. Its always a highlight of the week!) Katie shared cookies and Daisy brought some bread to share with K and O.
I think what makes it so special to me, so warms my heart, is Katie's desire to make the simple bread and cookies special by serving it in a "fancy" bowl and plate.  She thought that their snack time should be  fun and deserved more then paper plates. She wanted to make this memorable and bless her friend by making it beautiful!  It encourages me that in this small act she loves well.
So my challenge to myself and you is to try and make a simple act more special. Serve your kids dessert (ex. Apple crisp) for breakfast. Get out the fancy cups and put in chocolate milk. Light the candles at dinner time. Do a bubble bath instead of a rinse off.  It may not always be noticed, but love never fail. Take the time to try to make someone feel loved, by making simple things more beautiful.

"I even have a phone in my back pocket like a mom, " said Katie.

Kid quotes

1. Owen, what high school sports would you like to do someday?
Humm, an announcer! And then each day I will play tee ball one day, then baseball, then basketball.

2. Katie and how about you? I want to play tee ball and maybe be a cheerleader.

3. Owen also told me that he wanted to practice basketball everyday and get good until he is old...like when he is 13.

4. And we also told Owen tonight, please stop licking arm. Really?? I can't believe we said that sentence to our kids.

Conversations to come

Katie recently called her friend Catie Beth who started Kindergarten a few weeks before Katie does at Bayleaf.  Here are a few quotes I overheard as she had it on speaker.

"Thanks for the advice Catie Beth...I think I'll have fun in Kindergarten!"

When asked about what was hard or difficult in Kindergarten, Catie Beth responded, "The really hard homework is writing your name five times!"

Catie Beth also told Katie about her schools discipline program and it involves stars and trying to keep those stars on green.  She told Katie, "But it is also hard if your star goes to red because if you go on red you go to the principle's office!" Katie oooohed back in a very excited voice, "Maybe you'll go there someday!"  To which Catie Beth said, "Oh NO, its really BAD!"

I can see these conversations happening as they get older and right now it is pretty priceless!

Owen's response, "No Katie, I am NOT on the same page. I am on a different page".

journaling-Broken World

We have some friends/family, who we love, that are grasping onto faith, that are living by hope, that are seeking joy in our broken world, but it is a daily struggle.
It's all around us, brokenness that is...
But our God is a living God.  He is here.  He is present.  He is good!  He is writing His story. He is love and to put it the way that Katie said it to me today, "Love is good even when we make mistakes."  And if God is good then He is love and we can trust Him as He holds our lives in His hands.
Tell yourself the truth.  Tell it to sing to Jesus.  Tell it trust Jesus.  Tell it to think on whatever is lovely, right, true and lasting...
Praise Him. "We are waiting here for you, with our hands lifted high in praise".  And to praise means to speak out loud and in public, to actively say what the Lord has done, how he has been faithful, praise Him for his mighty power and His grace, His works and for His attributes
(parts from disciplers Bible Study)
So dear friends and family, raise your hands in praise.  Grasp onto the hands on the Lord who is walking every step of our lives with us, tell yourself what is true and let me also tell you.

*And know that as much as I would love to be a great writer, I am not.  I have thoughts that tumble around my head and I want to put them on here for me, for others, for my family.
So peeps that read my blog, thanks of the grace when reading.  :)

Santa Clause gets a Valentines Day Card

Katie told Owen about the project she finished last night, which was a Valentine card.
Then Kt asked Owen, "Do you know who I am sending it to?"
Owen responded, "To Santa Clause?"
Katie then laughed, "No silly!!"
